Founded in 1999, the High Park Nature Centre is a not-for-profit organization that instills awareness, understanding and respect for the natural world. We engage children, youth and families in the stewardship of High Park's significant natural areas through hands-on outdoor environmental education and park stewardship. Our year-round programs inspire park visitors to develop closer connections with nature in their city and ensure a sustainable future for High Park for generations to come.

"OURSpace" (Outdoor Urban Restoration Space) is the High Park Nature Centre's unique new outdoor classroom and ecological restoration area, made possible by generous support from the Weston Family Parks Challenge. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Outdoor Classroom Coordinator is responsible for animating OURSpace with educational programs and outreach events, working with volunteers to maintain native plant demonstration gardens and organizing tools, equipment and supplies for the project.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• General maintenance of native plant demonstration gardens, including planting, weeding and watering;
• Planning, coordinating and instructing planting programs in OURSpace for schools, corporate groups, community groups and families;
• Planning, coordinating and instructing a children’s BioBlitz event in OURSpace;
• Coordinating native plant deliveries, organizing and caring for plant stock;
• Set up of outdoor learning stations and development of nature play programming;
• Training and mentoring volunteers working in native plant demonstration gardens;
• Assisting with the organization and maintenance of tools and equipment;
• Writing blog entries and providing content (stories, photographs) for social media; and
• Other duties as required.

• Degree or diploma in biology, ecological restoration, landscape ecology, horticulture;
• Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario's native plants (specifically tallgrass prairie species) and experience gardening with native plants and/or ecological restoration;
• Minimum 2 years of experience working with children and/or youth in an educational capacity, preferably in outdoor environmental education;
• Experience supervising and training volunteers;
• Positive, flexible attitude and exceptional communication skills (oral and written);
• Flexible work schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends;
• Ability to work in all conditions, including rain, heat and exposure to biting insects (mosquitoes and red ants);
• Physically fit, able to lift and carry heavy weights (25-30 lbs);
• Demonstrated ability for effective teamwork as well as independent work; and
• Access to own vehicle and a valid Ontario Driver’s license an asset.

A current Vulnerable Sector Check and First Aid certification are required for this position.

Position Details: This is a 6.5 month contract position, starting in late-April and ending in early November. All work is conducted on-site. The successful candidate will work 22.5 hours per week (three 7.5 hour days per week). Some evening and weekend work is required.
